Nevis mansion House

Getting Here:
Nevis Laboratories is located at 136 S. Broadway (NY RT 9) in Irvington NY.  Directions to get to Nevis Labs can be found here on the Nevis Web Page.

The one change to the directions that I would make is that coming from LaGuardia Airport, head east on the Grand Central Parkway and follow directions to the Whitestone Bridge. Head north on the Hutchinson River Parkway and then follow the directions as if coming from JFK.  The Deegan  Expressway (I87) can be busy, especially during New York Yankee's games.  Of course the same thing can be said about the Van Wyke Expressway if the New York Mets are in town.

Getting around Westchester is best done by car, although traffic can be bad. There is a bus line, the beeline, however in the 15 years I have been in Westchester, I have never riden one. You can also take a cab, but you will need to call in advance and they are not always cheap. If you want to go into the city, take the train. Trains out of White Plains to Grand Central run from 5:00am to about 1:00am, and are frequent. Trains also run along the Hudson River (Tarrytown, Irvington, Ardsley-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry) but are not as frequent. Get a ticket before getting on the train from one of the ticket machines, and check to see if you are riding a peak or off-peak train. If you buy a ticket on the train it will cost you more. The cost is about $10 one-way depending on the time and stations.

Places to stay:
If you want to stay close to Nevis, here are a few places.  The lower priced places are generally listed first, other then that I make no claim as to the quality. All places are in neighboring communities just a few miles from Nevis. Depending on the time of day, the drives are usually 5-10 minutes.
Of course there are other places around, so don't feel like these are the only choices, just some of the closer choices.

Things To Do (Other then Physics):
Well we are close to NYC (40 minutes by train) and there is a lot to do in the city. However, if you want something more local, this area has a lot to offer. If you like to go antique shopping, there are a number of places in downtown Tarrytown to wonder through. Downtown Dobbs Ferry offers a number of art galleries to browse. Then there are the local historical sites: SunnySide home of Washington Irving in Irvington, the Rockefeller Estate and Lynnhurst Estate in Tarrytown. The Old Dutch Church and Burying grounds in Sleep Hollow. If one wants to get some excercise, there is the Old Croton Aqueduct that runs from Croton NY to Bronx NY, passing through the Nevis grounds and Rockefeller State Park on Rt 117 just a few miles north.

Places to eat:
Westchester has a lot to offer in the way of food. Quick cheap breakfasts can be found at almost any deli, although there is normally no seating. After that you can find anything from great bar food, I recommend the Candlelight on Central Ave, to 5-Star resteraunts. This is New York so expect the prices to be a little more then other parts of the country and tipping is expected to be generous. You may also find that parking can be somewhat of an adventure. Make sure to pay the meter (if required), or you will be paying the parking lords. Some towns now have "muni-meters" so look around to see if payment is required. As in the city, when it comes to parking signs the higher the sign on the post, the higher it's presedence.
