Science Honors Program
Experiments in Atomic and Nuclear Physics

Laboratory and theoretical work on the properties of electrons and photons,
the structure and dynamics of atoms, the radioactive decay of nuclei,
and the properties of elementary particles.
The developement of our current understanding of atoms, nuclei, and the fundamental particles that
form them has developed as a result of many key experiments conducted around the turn of the 20th
century. We will discuss many of these while considering the theory that motivated them and how physics
evolved as a result.
Most days there will be a lab or excersize to help illustrate the physics we'll be discussing.
In many of the labs, we will actually be reproducing some of the most famous and ground breaking
experiments in physics. To make the labs go a bit more smoothly, I encourage students to have a look
at the lab for that week before hand, and read through what we'll be doing.
