Thanks to Dan, I got nudged in the right direction. I spoke with Johnny Green about ordering some parts and pieces for testing and prototyping. After going over most of the details, Johnny recommended involving John Anderson. John, Johnny and I met for a half hour last Thursday morning. I said I would like to have the patch panel/bulkheads designed and built and sitting on the sidewalk by the end of the summer, and they felt this was a reasonable goal. Same for the extension cables connecting the BLS to the ADF. John prepared a work request form. Johnny summarized the open questions of which I was not certain of an answer, and I forwarded them to Dan. Meanwhile, Johnny made up the requisition for 300 feet of the Madison cable that Dan spec'd out for use as the extension cables. We can study the affects on the signal as it transitions from the existing blue BLS cable to the new ADF extension cable. This can go on in parallel to the design of the patch panel/bulkhead. If a problem is found with the cable, this will impact the design. I queried Terry Erickson about when we could expect the cable. It is a stock item, and we requested May 10 as a "need by" date. One minor but unfortunate hurdle was figuring out who could sign for the project number. That cost us two days. For now, we are assuming that we can use FIVE full racks for mounting patch panels/bulkheads which receive the existing BLS blue cables from the front and the yet to be made ADF extension cables from the rear. We may only need FOUR. Also, we are assuming that each ADF crate will get a rack all to itself. If anyone at anytime can think of why this would be a problem, please let me know. Such a layout will let us make shorter ADF extension cables too. Still need to figure out the maximum length... I'll continue to log our progress on this web page: http://www-d0.fnal.gov/~alstone/D0Work/L1CAL/l1cal.html Alan
