- A box of volume V contains N particles of mass m, moving
in various random directions with speed v. From dimensional
analysis, find how the pressure (
Force per unit area)
depends on N, V, m, and v. Can you draw any conclusions
concerning the nature of absolute temperature? (This last
question assumes you have previously seen some empirical
relation for, say, the product of pressure and volume.)
- 12.
- On this assignment (for the paper version, not
the Web-posting) is an excerpt from a New York Times article
(15-Feb-95). Suppose I give you a little additional information,
such as the take-off speed of a jet is about
mph.
Estimate the deceleration of the plane after the crew
realized their error. To simplify the problem, you may assume
that in the last second between ``should have braked'' and
``did start braking'' that the plane was moving with the
same (take-off) speed
, but you should state how large
of an error this might lead to.
