| Homework are assigned
in ten separate sets, each consisting of 6 - 10 problems. The
assigned problems are listed at the end of this page along with the dates
they are due. Any relevant new issues about homework will be posted
at the "What's New?" section of the Course main page.
Homework should be handed in before lecture on the due date. You will
be credited with all problems credibly attempted, and one problem per
chapter will be graded in detail. See Grading
policy for details of the course grading. Note that
- no late homework is accepted, and
- homework has minimal weight toward your grade (10%).
Exams (which provide the bulk of the grade weight) consist of problems
similar to (but different in detail) from the homework. You will not be
able to do well on exams unless you are able to do homework problems on
your own.
If you have specific physics questions about the homework, you are
encouraged to e-mail me directly.
I will try to reply within about a day, if possible. If I deem it to be of
general use, I will post question and answer at the website page Hmwork
Feedback (with your name deleted). The page will provide *.pdf files,
labeled by problem set, with the correspondence. You may find this
web page of questions and answers useful.
The Help & Contacts web
page discusses specifics on assistance in doing problems. You are encouraged
to take advantage of any of the following optional possibilities to effectively
utilize homework to learn:
- Work with your classmates and others.
- E-mail to Prof. Sciulli about specific problem issues.
- Get assistance from the Help Room graduate teaching assistants.
- Use the textbook examples and the metro media CD associated with the
text.
- See the assigned problems worked out in detail (after the due date)
at recitation sessions.
- Obtain help during Prof. Sciulli's scheduled office hours,
- Use any other ways you find personally useful.
It must be emphasized that, ultimately, you must be able to do problems
on your own during in-class examinations in order to succeed in the
course. The homework is an essential tool in demonstrating to
yourself that you can do this, or to show yourself areas that require
further work.. If you have arrived at a solution with help, take the final
step of doing the problem by yourself and without aids to make sure
you understand it well, and then try similar problems in the text.
Frankly, if you don't treat homework as a serious tool, you won't learn
much and also won't do very well in the course!
Solutions will be posted through this page soon after the homework
assignment is handed in. Be sure to check that you did the problems
correctly. Your ability to solve homework problems is a demonstration to
yourself that you understand the material in preparation for
exams. The exam grades are much more important than homework
grades.
Homework is to be placed
before lecture in a (labelled) box at the front of the lecture
hall.
Make
sure your homework is in correct page order and STAPLED together. Include
prominently at the top of the first page

Getting Your Problem Set Back
Graded problem sets will be returned approximately 7 days after they are
turned in. (If you think you will need your homework for study purposes
before this, you should make a copy for yourself before handing it
in.) Returned homework should be found on the shelf outside
the third floor entrance to 301 at the lecture one week after they are
collected. If they are not picked up then, they will be filed in the
alphabetically marked boxes at the campus level entry to Pupin on the
fifth floor.
